On Friday, a Russian ballistic missile attack destroyed homes in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa. Shortly after, first responders who rushed at the scene were the target of a second missile, according to officials.

There were sixteen or more fatalities.

The strike happened as the war in Ukraine enters its third year and Russians started casting ballots in a presidential election that would almost certainly result in Vladimir Putin maintaining his hold on power for an additional six years after he repressed dissent.

A paramedic and an emergency services employee were among the deceased. According to officials, at least 53 additional persons were hurt by the Iskander-M missiles.

According to emergency officials and regional governor Oleh Kiper, the impact caused damage to at least ten houses in Odesa and some emergency service equipment. It also caused a fire.

The military term for this approach is "double tap" since it involves launching another missile at the same spot with the intention of hitting rescuers. These attacks frequently harm civilians.

Kiper declared that Odesa would observe a day of grief on Saturday, marking the second such event in less than two weeks.

Twelve people were killed on March 2, including five children, when a Russian drone crashed into a multistory building.

Moscow has maintained, despite strong evidence to the contrary, that its forces do not target civilian areas.

Russia has been stepping up its attacks on Odesa, a port city in the south with a million or so residents, since last summer.

Attackers have mostly targeted port infrastructure in an effort to impede the export of products, after l

Additionally, Moscow officials have stated that they are targeting Ukrainian sea drone storage sites in preparation for an attack on Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

The international accord that allowed Ukraine and Russia to send their grain to the rest of the world last year was largely dependent on the ports in the Odesa region.

The majority of people in Odesa are Russian speakers, and some of the most famous people in Russian history have been connected to the city, including poet Anna Akhmatova, author Leo Tolstoy, and Catherine the Great.

Its beaches were popular with Russian visitors up until the Kremlin forcibly invaded the neighboring Crimean Peninsula in 2014, and its Orthodox cathedral is owned by the patriarchate of Moscow.

Meanwhile, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov of Belgorod, near the Russian border, reported that two persons were hurt and one member of the territorial defense forces was killed on Friday due to Ukrainian fire.

Russian drone strikes on a building in the central Vinnytsia region of Ukraine resulted in two further fatalities and three injuries overnight, according to regional governor Serhii Borzov.

All 27 Shahed drones that Russia had launched over the districts of Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Khmelnytskyi, and Kyiv were shot down, according to the Ukrainian air force.
