| Breaking: CAA launches! To learn about Indian citizenship, go to this page. |
https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in has been launched by the Union Home Ministry (MHA) to allow people who have been persecuted in Afghanistan, Pakistan, or Bangladesh due to their religious beliefs—Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians—to apply for Indian citizenship.
The MHA announced the Rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA-2019) on Monday, which prompted this action. These regulations, which are now called the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024, make it easier for refugees from the aforementioned populations who sought asylum in India before to December 31, 2014, to be granted Indian citizenship.
On Monday, March 11, 2024, the Narendra Modi administration formally declared that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) regulations would go into effect. The Citizenship Arrangement Act (CAA), which was passed by Parliament in 2019 amid intense opposition, simplifies the citizenship procedure for non-Muslim immigrants, including as Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Hindus, who fled persecution in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and came to India before to 2014. The Act has been subject to multiple delays and continuous criticism from opposing parties even after it was passed.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs announced, "Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) notified today the Rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA-2019)," in a statement that was uploaded on X, the former name of Twitter. These regulations, known as the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024, will make it possible for those who meet the requirements of CAA-2019 to apply for Indian citizenship."
Applications must specify the year of their undocumented entry into India. The entire application procedure will take place online using a recently created webpage.
In response to earlier speculations about the release of the CAA rules, West Bengal's chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, said, "Let me see the rules first." The announcement has not yet been made. We will fight against any legal impairment of rights that takes place. This is just election-related publicity for the BJP."
